[ CHARACTER INFORMATION ]
Name: Heisuke Toudou
Age: Around 22, appears to be a teenager
Gender: Male
Canon: Hakuouki: Shinsengumi Kitan
Timeline: 1867, two months after the Aburano Koji incident
Background:
Hakuouki wiki page
Heisuke's wikia page
Personality:
Heisuke is known as the youngest member of the Shinsengumi, this being the case he's also recognized as someone that is rather joyful, always smiling and the loudest of the group. He is someone that would sooner joke about a situation than to become down about it, trying to cheer everyone else around him in the process. Because of this he is sometimes seen as a sort of peacekeeper, always the one to try and break the tension and to get everyone back on track once more. However, him being the way he is gets him in trouble quite a bit, not only with the other members but with the higher ups as well. Such is evident when Heisuke asks Chizuru to play in the snow with him, his two other friends also come along- Harada and Nagakura, and they all start a brawl with the snowballs that Heisuke had initiated. In the end, he had gotten beat by Nagakura's snowball and became trapped under a pile of snow, his commander, Hijikata, caught him and the rest of his friends left the scene. When Heisuke noticed he was all alone he tried to come up with one excuse after another, jokingly trying to get out of it before he was punched out by his commander due to his actions.
While he is someone that is generally happy, he is also quick to anger. Heisuke, being the rash man that he is, is someone that quite enjoys a good fight. He is guilty of actively seeking a sort of brawl in the streets, and of course fights are something he excels at. While he is short, something that riles him up when people comment on it as well, he has excellent fighting capabilities, which tends to catch his enemies off guard since they're not expecting the little guy to pack such a punch. He can grow irritated with someone rather quickly, growing frustrated and making a big deal out of it, of course once he does calm down he is someone that can grow rather mellow about the situation, even after having his outburst about it. One aspect that seems to trigger him into becoming angry or heated about something is when his friends are in danger, when he feels the need to protect them. He's not afraid to get hurt, especially not if he's fighting to protect something, and deep down it's what drives him in a fight the most. As long as he has something to believe in, he knows that he can keep going and fight even if it does get hard for him sometimes. Such an occurance happens in his route, after he's been turned into a Rasetsu, he questions Chizuru, asking her if he's just a dead guy and a monster now then what is he fighting for anymore? He had always followed his own path but he can't do that anymore so he had felt so drained and numb to everything. Eventually though he realized that he wanted to fight for her and he believed in that completely, and such a thing helped him continue on.
Touching more on this, the fact that Heisuke is a caring person and thinking of his friends constantly. He might be the prankster, someone that is constantly loud and seems as though he's constantly out of the loop, he's actually someone that can be quite perceptive and understand a situation before he speaks, thinking of the others around him before he does. It ties in with how he tries to cheer people up, he understands them and just wants to see them in a better mood so he'll try his hardest to get them that way. The closest friendships he has are with Harada and Nagakura as well, the three of them even refer to themselves as the Idiot Trio. Often times the three of them are seen hanging out, training and the like- and even going to the red-light district to drink alcohol and see the pretty girls there. However, Heisuke is more of a modest man, so when Chizuru questioned him about where they were going he told her not to get the wrong idea, he was just going to hang out with the guys. He's even willing to go out of his way to help someone just because he feels as though they need it. Throughout the canon Chizuru is constantly looking for her father, and when Heisuke is being asked to go to Edo to recruit new members, he tells her that he'll head to her house while he's there to search for clues as well, just wanting nothing more than to help out a good friend of his. He's small in height, but has a big heart when it comes down to it.
His beliefs are something that he always keeps close to himself as well, even though a lot of the time he feels as though he has doubts about his actions since they conflict with some of the others members of the Shinsengumi. He is someone that is loyal and wishes to stick by someone if he's been around them longer, like how he sided with Itou when he came to stay with the group, despite the fact that everyone else hated him for how he was so open about wanting the Emperor to take control of the country again, not the Shogunate. And while Heisuke is in the Shinsengumi, a military group that takes orders from and supports the Shogunate, he has firm beliefs in the fact that he is an national imperialist. Basically, he believes that the person running the country should run out the foreign influences, just like the Shogunate is doing, however he believes more so in the Emperor than the Shogunate, while a lot of his friends do not. He doesn't talk about his fact much, but it was something that came up when the Shinsengumi got orders to guard the Shogunate and its troops, while everyone else was excited Heisuke was rather wary, and he even asked to stay behind due to not feeling well. It was a lie however, he just didn't want to guard something like that especially when he was so against it. While he does wish to stand by these thoughts he feels a lot of the time such doubt from it, especially when he was considering leaving the Shinsengumi when Itou wanted to leave as well. He didn't want to stay because what they believed in conflicted with his own, but he felt like he was abandoning his friends and he wanted to stay by them more than anything, but in the end he chose to leave, and he said that during the months he was away he was regretting his choice every day. He didn't want to return because he felt as though he was just some traitor and coward for leaving them all and trying to follow his own path, but he was miserable the entire time. Eventually he stopped all of that, he stopped thinking about politics and beliefs and instead just wanted to be with his friends, so he decided to go back to them, however right around that time he was nearly killed and forced to become a Rasetsu.
While he is rather happy-go-lucky, he does have some demons that are stirring within him, namely the fact that he gets rather jealous of people when they discuss their families and topics such as those. This is due to the fact that within his own family he's a bastard child, he was forced to leave the Toudou domain and was only given a special sword that showed he was at least from that heritage, despite never fully admitting it or talking about it to anyone despite Chizuru when going down his respected route. He feels bitter towards his family and others, he feels as though the money he gets every month from his old man is hush money so he won't go looking for anyone from his family, but at least they're thinking about him a little bit. Chizuru attempts to cheer him up about this, and he just smiles at her and says he's fine with things being this way. When he admits this however it's also around the time he's already a Rasetsu, so he's convinced that with him being announced as dead that his family is probably better off without him and he won't be getting money from them anymore at least. Of course, he is scolded for saying this, and he grows quiet for a few moments before answering back and saying that she's probably right, this might be because he actually does believe her words or that somewhere deep down he really wants to believe that's the case, he wants to believe that his family cared for him at least a little bit before he 'died'. That being said, after he becomes a Rasetsu he tries to act tough for a while, avoiding the topic of being one entirely, acting like his old self and seemingly nothing is wrong. On the contrary, on the inside he feels as though he had just become a monster, someone that craves blood and he even feels the lust for it sometimes, how he feels like he wants to cut people up and drink their blood. Such a thing disgusts him, he wants to remain human until the bitter end, but he yells at Chizuru and tells her that he feels disgusted with himself as well, that he sees night as day and the sun as the moon during the day, everything is so backwards to him and he was even so frightened and confused about it all. Eventually the words of the MC were able to calm him down, and instead of fearing this kind of power he wanted to throw away all the issues with politics and just focus on these Rasetsu powers, to use it to protect those that he cared about, even saying he wanted to protect her the most (in his respective route of course).
Why is your character a good fit for the setting of Soul Campaign, and what will they do once they are in game?
Due to the fact that Heisuke is apart of a group that participates in stopping fights and patrolling the cities, he would try and do the same in Death City. He'd want to participate on missions, help anyone he could, and he might get into some fights himself but he means well in the end.
List the abilities your character will still have in Soul Campaign:
Heisuke's been trained with the sword for many years, he's a skilled fighter, and before being turned into a rasetsu he was a squad leader in the Shinsengumi, so he also has the ability to control and lead if see fit. He has all the abilities of a skilled samurai.
List the weaknesses your character will gain (or lose) in Soul Campaign:
Since he was turned into a rasetsu in his canon, he would lose all those abilities that came with it. He wouldn't be able to regenerate anymore, no more superhuman strength, his bloodlust would disappear and the sun wouldn't bother him anymore.

First-Person
[there is a confused face when the feed finally turns on, but it seems like he still doesn't even know that the video is going, that he's being recorded, it's all so new to him he simply doesn't understand. with a frown he blinks and sighs.]
Aahh.... just what am I supposed to do about all this?
[he tilts his head, still not getting that it's recording.]
This.... this thing or whatever it is, am I really supposed to just understand all of it right away? I mean- [he shakes the communicator, the video going blurry for a moment.] ...I talk to people with this?! Whatever happened to good 'ol fashioned letters? Or better yet, just talk in person! We could just organize a messenger service as well, I'm sure there are people that are used as a page or whatever around here too...
[he groans.] I just don't get i-.... wait.... hold on...
[heisuke squints, leaning in closer to inspect the device.]
Is it.... on? So... then what? What am I supposed to even do- this is so confusing, even if someone explained it to me I still think I'd be in the dark!
[with that, he let out a frustrated growl and he tossed the communicator somewhere, it shutting off as it hit the ground, of course.]
Third-Person
Heisuke was used to all kinds of situations, all kinds of surprises, but this had to be the biggest surprise of them all, a shock that would rock him to the very core.
He had dealt with monsters, with rasetsu, and had even experienced being one of them himself, but at least when he was with the Shinsengumi and it happened, he was surrounded by his friends, by people he knew, and even if he changed his surroundings didn't. So upon waking up in this chamber, his head throbbing, he held it with one hand as he listened to what was expected of him. His eyes squinted, narrowing in suspicion, and it wasn't until the room stopped spinning did he get it.
"W...hat...?" he managed to choke that out, then his eyes went wide, "what?! Are you..... you have to be kidding me!"
He stood up, looked around the room, his heart racing and he couldn't help but feel a little like he did when he left everyone before to join the guard, how he felt so alone even though he had Hajime back then with him. He called out, searching anything, anyone-
"Chizuru! Sano-san, Shinpatsu-san! ....Souji! Hajime-kun! Hijikata-saaan!" nothing, there was still nothing... Heisuke was always high spirited, always so confident and he would never show anyone if he was feeling down either way, but he felt his heart sink.
"...Sannan-san...? Kondou-san...?" his voice grew more quiet, and he knew that no one was here with him.
"Where... did you guys all go? Oi...."
As he called out to each one of them and heard no response in return, he could feel all hope leave him. Would he really be okay here? Would it all work out-...? He was told to try and help here to fight for the greater good, and he had thought he had been doing that back in Japan, but he didn't even ask to be here. And yet... there were things that he was used to already that he didn't ask for. He never asked to become a rasetsu, he didn't want any of that and yet it happened and he had to deal with it. He looked down at a hand, bringing it in front of his face, it curled into a fist and he placed it against his forehead as he tried to sort everything out, tried to stop everything from pounding so rapidly.
"...Calm down, just think..." he was here to help, pulled here specifically, he was chosen for this... right? So he was important, someone found him to be special and recognized his abilities. And for some reason, it wasn't as hard to breathe anymore, that feeling of always needing blood, it wasn't even here.
...Was he.... still a rasetsu even?
